Oh, This Is Weird

Were any of you aware that the family of convicted murderer Scott Peterson maintains their own e-mail newsletter filled with updates and such? Neither was I. The fine folks at Blottered apparently signed up early on, like, you know, when Scott was off dying his hair blond and growing a beard. Today, they posted the most recent missive from the clan of Scott:

I suspect the topics of conversation in these newsletters will begin to run pretty thin in about, oh, well, let's see...now sounds good. Ever the public servant, however, I'm happy to provide some ideas for the future:

Why is Scott Peterson famous?

He's not the only man to kill his pregnant wife of Christmas Eve. He's not even the only middle-class white guy from California to pull that stunt. Why is he famous?

He's not even a celebrity beyond his trial. Chris Rock said it best. If OJ Simpson were Orenthal the bus driver, he'd have been in San Quentin before the gavel fell, and no one would know about it. So why do we know about Scott Peterson?

Only a scumsucking reprobate like Peterson would turn killing his wife into a major industry.

This will become clear when La Regan arrives in Los Angeles. It's about reality, tie-ins, big stuff. It's over my head. What appears crass and disgusting is just too complex to grasp.

Jim -- Are there really others? We probably know about Peterson because she went missing for a good while first, and there were posters and vigils. The Petersons were a good-looking young couple, photogenic (think Elizabeth Smart -- so many missing girls, why publicize that one?), and their images were splashed all over the media. Then, just as the story might have faded, the girlfriend gives a press conference. Then the body washes up. And so on and so on ...

Is anyone gonna comment on the fact that the whore that Scott Peterson killed his wife for, and his half sister who knows why he did it, are standing side by side with the woman who edited BOTH their books? Oh, never mind that a member of the family is dead, and that the blonde motivated the killing. They get rich (well, as rich as a one-time author can get), the man goes to jail and Laci's dead. I would think the two would not want to see each other, let alone stand together and smile for a picture and, oh yeah, WRITE BOOKS FOR THE SAME EDITOR.

Women must be the bane of man's potential, I swear. The praying mantis and black widow, species whose females kill their mates once they're knocked up, are probably the greatest representation of the male/female sexual and procreational relationship. Thanks for leaving your heel prints on Scott and Laci's foreheads, ladies.

I hope not. I try to be a good, decent person. A long time ago I made a stupid mistake and had an affair with a married man. He didn't kill his wife and he didn't last long in my life afterwards. To me, this man (not all men) was the bane of my existence. It took me many years to get over him, but I have.

I'll cut Amber some slack. Scott lied to her, she didn't know he was married, and he acted alone on his impulse to kill Laci. Was Amber wrong to have an affair? Well, she did end things with Scott (in a pretty dramatic way) once she realized that Laci was his wife and was missing. She even helped the police by taping their conversations and trying to get Scott to admit to killing Laci.

Nobody is perfect. We all make mistakes. It is how we correct the mistakes we make and learn from them that matters.

So much certainty of guilt and yet -- show me even one molecule of evidence that points to guilt and is incapable of innocent explanation. When did 'beliefs' and 'feelings' become an acceptable substitute for actual evidence?
